Penultimate Entry

Hi Prague blog devotees,

Well, let me walk you through the run and the outcomes therein. We started off and it took about 3 1/2 minutes to get to the starting position. Not unusual in these circumstances. Harvey took the picture to the right showing me waiting to start and then ran around the corner and waited for me to come along before getting the second picture of me pulling out onto the bridge going north across the river.

Didn't really know how to dress for the day. Started off set up for a Canadian March 29th with multiple layers of clothing. Took off my fleece before I started but about 10 minutes in realized that the windbreaker was problematic so I stopped, de-pinned my number plate and RFID tracker and then reconstructed myself by tying the jacket around my waste and putting the number on my T-Shirt.

Probably had too fast a pace for the first 5 km. I was operating under a deficit of information as there was a gap between my watch and my actual starting time. A gap that got worse every time I went under a bridge and the watch lost satellitte signal. I somehow became convinced by the 10 km point that the difference was as much as 25 minutes and I guess the 2:51 for my last practice run stuck in my head so I thought I might be in trouble making the 3:00 time limit for the race. In any case, my pace by the 10 km point was closer to the 6:45 - 7:00 that I wanted but I was more tired that I should have been at that point. Saw Dieter and Harvey just shy of the 10 km water stop but no picture was successfully taken of anything other than my elbow so I shan't include it here.

By the time I got to 15 km I was feeling pretty good but shortly after that at around 16 km I started to feel the first edge of tiredness loop in and was really beginning to wonder about the difference between my watch and the real clock. At 18 1/2 km I did see a clock which indicated the gap was only 9 minutes, I was in good shape time wise so I decided to do a bit of walking to make up for some of the walking breaks I had skipped. Walked for 1 km, ran for a further 1/2 and then ran the last km across the bridge and to the finish line. Whew! Was I ever tired. Dieter and Harvey were there with a cold beer but I needed a glass of water first, drank that, started the beer and then grabbed an apple - best tasting thing I ever had, that apple.

After that, the rest of the day and evening went well. Just some quality time between some old friends.

As to the song of the race. well, at around the 8km point a favourite came up which may have been a song of the day before. This song is also liked by both my sons so I want to dedicate both it and the race to them. They have the capacity to do things in their lives which make this effort seem modest and humble. I have a great deal of faith in the future knowing that there are such young people as James and Andrew in it. The song is the Who's classic ode to the "wild lad" Dr. Jimmy from Quadrophenia.

The next and final posting to this blog will occur when I post a flickr slideshow on this whole experience sometime in the next week or so. I am also regularly posting to my full time daily blog at http://paul-mackin-daily.blogspot.com/ and would ask that you check there regularly for all sorts of fun stuff. In the mean time, I want to thank you all for participating. It has been a tremendous amount of fun for me and I hope for you as well.

News flash:

From Race Officials:

  • Offical Time: 2:31:56

  • Offical Pace: 7:14

  • Real Time: 2:28:20 (time from crossing start line to finish line)

  • Real Pace: 7:12

In the picture to the right, I am the fellow in the upper left of the photo, barely descenable, with the blue shirt with red jacket, tied around my waste, just 2 seconds shy of the finish line. It is far clearer if you click on the picture and see the full resolution version. The girl is Harvey's to explain, not mine.

From my perspective:

  • Feet: sore

  • Beer: Cold and wet

  • Feeling: Fantastic

I am extremely happy with this result. Going to be tied up with Dieter and Harvey for the next several hours but will post a detailed entry about the run in short order, likely Sunday morning.

Well, this is it.

As I sit here this evening and post to this blog, I am thinking about the journey this has been. I am actually quite tired tonight, no running since Wednesday but a lot of walking. Of course the journey I refer to is our journey together on this blog. Thank you all, for your warmth and support.

Today, Harvey and I went down to the registration tent and I registered as shown in the photo here. Then Harvey, Dieter and I played tourist ending with a wonderful dinner tonight of pasta (at least for me - something of a runner tradition) along with some fine Czech beer. I am now back in my room and ready to hit the sack before 10:00PM. But wanted to touch base with you all as, in my next posting, we will all know how this turned out.

The three amigos are in Prague!

Run in Prague fanatics,
So, two of the best telecom engineers I have ever had the privalge of working with are now in Prague. I pale in comparison to these two stalwarts of the industry and am honoured to have them as my cheering committee for Saturday's run, now annoyingly getting closer.

Dieter arrived around mid day today and we set off for a bit of a pub crawl across the city. Harvey arrived early this evening and joined us for phase two - an increasingly funny afair as we started to realize that we had a subjective bladder age of 57.6 years old - locating WC's became far more important than pubs as we went forward. Nonetheless, we are now feeling reasonably refreshed and ready for next events which include:
  1. Final registration for the run tomorrow

  2. A good solid walk around Prague

  3. A quite dinner in the early evening

  4. Early to bed for Paul as Saturday looms before him

No run today but in spite of that all is well, as the boys are back in town...

In Prague and Running it!

Hey Space Cadets!

I arrived in Prague with minimum fanfare yesterday. The usual adoring crowds completely noticable by their abscence. There was a fair bit of traffic and some blowing snow as my taxi brought me into the city. I arrived at the Hotel Jalta on Wenceslas Square, upacked and crashed for a couple of hours. Did a walkabout of the city in the afternoon and then slept again before going out to have dinner at a nearby restaraunt which featured a pretty good jazz quartet. Had a nice pork steak (the local meat), with a salad and some potatoes. I took the picture shown here (click on it to see the detail) as I was out for dinner, it shows Wenceslas Square at night - very pretty.

This morning up and had a nice continental breakfast, grabbed a map and got onto map my run and laid out a 6.5 km route which included going up through old town square, across the Vltava River, a run along under the castle and then up onto the Charles Bridge, over along the Vltava again to the national theater, up to the national museum and through the park around it back to my hotel. If all goes well a slide show of this should be on the blog tomorrow.

Anyway it was a great run - by concidence my Garmin GPS watch rated the distance as 6.66 km and given that I am not religious, a numerologist or superstitious, the perversity of the number just makes me smile.

Today's song of the day was Bryan Ferry's version of Bob Dylan's All along the Watchtower. We had no winner on last week's contest - shocked and stunned that I am that nobody could check wikipedia and find out the name of the band Cheap Trick and its members.

Today's question is a bit easier. Bryan Ferry played with the band Roxy Music - who was their original keyboardist? Send your answers to pmackin1959@gmail.com

Stay tuned for more news from Prague - Dieter and Harvey arrive tomorrow. More on that later.

On my way!

Hi gang,

I am writing this from the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge here at Pearson Airport in Toronto. My flight leaves in just over two hours and after a bit of a hectic day, I am settling in for the flight to Germany and my subsequent connection to Prague. I just received one other piece of good news, it looks like I will be bumped to business class and this flight in on a Boeing 777 with private cabins and full beds. Life is tough!

OK so for my last run in Canada for the next couple of weeks, I completed an 8.7 km jog this morning. I am feeling good and fit and only suffering from minor nervousness due to the possiblity of actually making an arse of myself by not completing this. Actually, I feel pretty confident but, one never knows, does one...

Song of the day is All Night and All Day by the Kinks. I will be posting our final contest question tomorrow and will announce the winner of this past weeks.

Tomorrow - pictures from Prague - I promise!

Starting the week the only way I can

Hi there,

I just completed a 10.3 km run from home to my kids place - lovely day for it. I am now into packing mode and trying to get everything finished that I have to before I fly tomorrow.

I will post a longer blog entry from the airport tomorrow afternoon. Today's song of the day is dedicated to a dear friend, Eric Drew, to celebrate the occasion of his marriage to the lovely Lisa. The song Veracruz was written and performed by Warren Zevon, perhaps one of the greatest songwriters of his day - sadly missed after his death of lung cancer. Eric introduced me to Zevon years ago on a weekend trip to my cottage and when the song came up on my iPod today, it made me think of him and the announcement of his marriage.

Eric, I wish you and Lisa all the best, mate.

Guys, I will post you again tomorrow and please, do check out my new blog (http://paul-mackin-daily.blogspot.com/) to which I will be premanently writing as of approximately eight days from now.

Cheers!

So what happens after Prague?

Well, with the 1/2 Marathon one week from today, I have been giving some thought to whether or not I will continue blogging after I complete my trip to Prague. I do have another event scheduled for late April but I have enjoyed this experience a great deal and so I have decided to set up a new blog which will kick in after the end of March.

It is still under construction but you are welcome to check it out as it now stands: http://paul-mackin-daily.blogspot.com/. It's themes are a big more complex than this first effort but, fear not, I will keep you up to date on running as well as other areas of interest.

Check it out and let me know what you think!

Eight days - eight days!

Hi guys,

Just a quick update - ran from my kids place to my house today 12.4 km in 1:26. Beautiful day for it too! Kept my pace under 7:00 minutes which is great for that distance.

Today's song of the day is Bachman Turner Overdrive's Taking Care of Business. Stay tuned, more tomorrow!

Real men wear Bunny Ears!

Hi gang,

Completed Rebecca's Bunny Hop this evening at the new Running Room in Aurora, hosted by RR President John Straton. Attached are a couple of pictures of the event captured by my friend and colleague Debra Rimmer who kindly agreed to come along and serve as photographer. Completed the 5 km with a lap pace of 6:02, which is pretty darned good for an old guy.

Deb is also the person who correctly answered last week's song trivia contest with the response: Roger Taylor, Brian May and Paul Rogers - as the newly formed version of the classic rock band Queen.

Today's song of the day was Dream Police by, well, let me get to that later. Our trivia contest is regarding this band from the state currently represented by a certain partially African American Senator who is in the news a fair bit these days. These guys, who had a couple of great albums and continue to show up at concerts from time to time have a couple of really interesting characters in the band.

In any case, our trivia contest this week is to name the band in question and the band members of that band. I will update the blog again in the next few days - getting close, kids, really close.

Whew!

Well, friends, you should be happy to note that with two weeks to go, today I proved I could go the distance. I just completed a run of a shade under 22 km in just about 2:50 minutes

I think this means that I won't be disappointing those of you who have choosen to follow this blog through to its end.

Folks, it is two weeks until the big day. I will be flying to Prague on the 24th, arriving on the 25th and my friends Harvey and Dieter joining me on the 27th. The race is on the 29th.

Well, it is Saturday, and like every Saturday, I have a ton to get done. I will follow up with a further posting on our weekly contest tomorrow. Our song of the day today is Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline - and why the hell not. Keeping checking in, there should be activity every day from now until run day.

That's better!

Well,

Knock on wood and all that but things are looking up a bit. Today was 7C and the roads were great for running back home in Aurora. I was even wearing spring running gear including my favorite baseball cap instead my warmer winter hat. I covered 6.1 km in just over 43 minutes which puts me up at over 36 km this week so far. I plan to do a long run tomorrow and have a charity run next week added to my training. I leave for Prague in just 10 days and I do feel ready for the task ahead.

Today's song of the day was difficult to select a few good ones presented themselves but I ultimately have to go with a real classic. kd lang's live performance of Hallelujah came at just the right moment and added to a really nice run.

Stay tuned for an update tomorrow. Things are starting to move fast and furious now, space cadets.

Urgh!!!

Well, gentle readers tonight was certainly fun. I am up in Bracebridge in the Muskoka area of Ontario, lovely place and I decided to do a 7.8 km run which some collegues here suggested. They also warned me about the hills and that the footing might be trecherous.

They were right.

Try to imagine running through 8 km of slush and puddles up to your ankles and you will have an idea of the experience. Hey, nobody's fault, winter in Central Ontario. Still I feel as if I have run 50% more than that - it was tough. Add to that a couple of killer hills and a wrong turn. Boy, staying in my room and reading an essay on economics would have been the smarter play.

Ok - so, song of the day, as I hack and gasp away all the collected fluid in my lungs (still got this cold, damn!), Misunderstanding by Genesis.

Tomorrow, day off. I am going to let the roads dry up before I try another Bracebridge run - perhaps next week.

Talk to you soon!

More than a feeling!

Today I covered the same route as yesterday in about five minutes less time and I am starting to feel that I can actually pull this off. My distance runs this week should be significant but I am still lacking on the long runs.

Just a short post - more tomorrow but today's song is to remind me that I have More than a feeling that I can complete this challenge. Boston's classic song played today whilst I was at km 3 and it is our offical song of the day.

Cheers!

We are down to less than 3 weeks!

Hey guys,

My old friend Harvey called me today from the UK to remind me that we will be meeting in Prague on the 27th and that he wasn't going all that way not to see me finish.

Today I managed to do an 11km run after digging out from the snow storm we had in Southern Ontario yesterday. Attached is a picture of my neighbour and I as we tackled the incredible mounds of snow which awaited us this morning.

Our contest this week was won by Andy Laird, my trainer, who correctly identified Patty Boyd (Harrison) as Eric Clapton's inspiration when he wrote the song Layla. The song was performed by Clapton as Derek in Derek and the Dominos. Andy is now precluded, along with my son James, from further participation in the contest. Today's song of the day was Queen's Bohemian Rapsody and the question of the week is as follows: Very recently, Queen reformed with two of the original members and one other musician who is providing vocals. Please name the three members of the new version of the band Queen. Send your answers to pmackin1959@gmail.com

I will be working out with Andy tomorrow and do have a run planned as well. So check back in regularly and please, this week's question is pretty easy so I expect lots of answers!

Ciao for now...

Back after a short recess.

Hi guys,

My cold decided to reassert itself costing me three days but I was able to get out for a 5 km run tonight and feel pretty good. This morning, Andy came over and we did a long session of Yoga type stretching and a 30 minute circuit focused on Abs.

Just a really quick post. Our song of the day came down to a toss up between two fine Canadian Bands - The Guess Who and Heart. I decided upon some reflection that Heart wins with Crazy on You.

Assuming I feel ok - I will be back at this tomorrow. Talk to you soon!

27 days to go...

Hi everyone,

Well, today was a 15.6 km jaunt with just beautiful weather - nice morning for a run. I seem to be able to make the distance and my time, while behind where I hoped it would be, is certainly enough to finish in a timely manner.

OK - so, our contest. We have one respondant to the question of last week: In what film did the Badfinger Song Come and Get it appear and who were the stars of that film. I can hear the howls of nepotism but James Mackin answered correctly that the 1970 film the Magic Christian, staring Peter Sellars and Ringo Star featured the Paul McCartney written song. James will receive a CD with each song of the day for the entire training period I have undertaken for the Prague run. Since that is the only prize I will be giving each week, James cannot enter this weeks contest.

To that contest. Today's song of the day was by a band called Derek and the Dominos entitled Layla. Perhaps some of you have heard of it? In any case, "Derek" composed the song about a particular person - who was that person?

Tonight I drive to Chatham and will run there tomorrow. I will update you further, gentle reader, as to my progress.

Paul
