Hi everyone,
Today I did my last run of 2007 a 13.8km long slow distance run. It went very well but I am clearly in no danger of running a half marathon tomorrow. In fact, as implicit in the title to this post, I am not running tomorrow, insteady Andy is coming over and we are going to tackle some circuit training, or weights, something horrible in any case...
My next run, aptly scheduled for January 1st is the Resolution Run hosted by the Newmarket Running Room. It is a five km jaunt and I am hoping to complete in in just a shade over 30 minutes. I have also signed up for a couple of other events - the Aurora Rebecca's Bunny Hop on March 19th, another 5 km run, as well as the Uxbridge half marathon on April 27th, just under one month after my run in Prague.
OK, so, "enough of that!", you say, let get to the good stuff! What is today's song of the day, well...
Rough Boys by Pete Townsend from his Empty Glass album. Great song, great album.
I probably won't post now until 2008 so, with that in mind, please let me wish you all a great New Year's Eve! Here is a copy of today's route:

Three months from today!
Gentle readers, three months from now, the second I write this, I will be drinking a very good tasting beer at the post run celebration in Prague. Hopefully having completed the event in less than 2:22 minutes - beating my best time for a 1/2 to date. More on the event itself and the city of Prague in later postings but, in the mean time, an update on today's activities.
Every Saturday morning I do a circuit workout with my sons, James and Andrew. Today was no different. The circuit is a combination of squats, cardio stepping, pushups, pulldowns, rowing and the "modified medicine ball thingie" I mentioned in a previous posting. Andy, our training has still yet to come up with a name for it.
Tomorrow is my weekly Long Slow Distance Run and I am aiming for a route that is approximately 14 km. I will update you again tomorrow!

With 92 days to go...
Things are starting to come together - my second 10 km or more run this week with a 7:04 average pace per km. I am probably slightly ahead of where I need to be in terms of training but must be dilligent as it is very easy to lose ground.
The focus for the rest of this month will be a long run on Sunday and some strength training Saturday and Monday. Then it is the new year and the focus moves on to increasing the weekly milage and, wait for it, a pretty strict diet. I would like to be down to as close to 100kg as possible before the race.
Today's song was Iggy Pop's Wild One. The distance covered was 10.9 km and the route follows. I will update you again after my workout tomorrow!

After a day off...
With 93 days to go today was catch up day. Boxing day was a no activity day, and after two days of celebrating with family, I really didn't have the energy for much yesterday.
Today, the 27th of December, was a different matter. This morning I started of with a 7.3 km run and this afternoon my trainer, Andy, came over for some circuit training. The training today was a bit intense. A basic circuit consisted of:
30 x squats with a 43kg barbell on my shoulders
30 x sit ups
30 x lateral pulldowns with 30 kg on the universal gym
30 x pushups
I was urged to complete three circuits with 30 seconds rest in between each group. After that we did 10 of the "stupid medicine ball thingie" which Andy made up better never thought to name for your benefit, oh fateful reader. Finally I was complelled to do the plank for 75 seconds. There there was a lot of stretching and a lot of panting.
Oh well, tomorrow we continue. Today's song of the day from the run is something by a band from Kansas City called The Rainmakers: One More Summer. The route map is shown below. Update you again tomorrow!

Merry Christmas 2007!
Only 95 days to go - just wanted to post my Christmas run update.
This morning it was slightly overcast, about 0 degrees C with neither wind nor traffic. Hit the road about 7:40 AM and was out for just over 30 minutes. Today's distance was 5.21 km.
When I run I listen to my iPod Shuffle and each day it presents me with randomly selected songs from the hundred or so that are currently in it. Each day I post I will give you all, faithful readers, a "Song of the Day" from those that I listen to when I run. They are usually hard rock songs - my tastes run more to Blues and Jazz but Rock and Roll is excellent for running.
Today's song of the day is....
Wait for it....

Today's route:
Signing off. Everyone enjoy the holidays!

Launching of blog - 96 days and counting
Well, today is the launch of the soon to be legendary Paul Mackin Prague 1/2 Marathon preparation site. The race is set to run in Prague, of all places, on March 29th.
My intention is initially to set this up so my friends can share in my excitement of preparing for this event. I will give more background to how I ended up doing this in the days to follow but suffice to say this is one of those stories about wanting to make some basic changes in one's life and having some fun in the process.
So, some stats for day one of the blog:
Height: 179 cm
Weight: 113.5 kg (a major point of difficulty at this point)
Current relevent distances run:
Today: 10.3 km - today's route:
Last week: 24.5 km
Previous week: 35.3 km
And now, I suppose, I should go and spend a bit of time with my family on Christmas Eve! Happy Holidays, everyone
